Never ending road between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer

A trip to Jaisalmer is quite a unique experience, and no better way to begin it than with a road trip. In October this year, as the long weekend approached, I traveled from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer by car. The journey of five hours (one side) is an exhausting and exhilarating journey to no bounds. As one leaves, the relatively cooler winds of Jodhpur and approaches the hot, sultry and dry lands of Jaisalmer, the change in topography and weather is quite noticeable.

We started our journey early in the morning and traveled for five hours covering a distance of close to 280 kms. The two cities are joined by a straight road, that seems never ending. Since the journey isnt through mountains, I could stay awake and enjoy the views. One can see the cityscape blurring and the dry sands of Jaisalmer within almost two hours of journey. One can spot camels, locals and quite a few tea stalls on the journey. Not to miss are the crazy curves, windmills in the distance and scorching sun.

While many are tempted to save money and use public transportation for this travel, I suggest everyone should hire a cab (which costs about Rs 5000- to and fro). Take the cab to Jaisalmer and Sam’s Desert which is an hour drive from the city. The journey back is quite haunted with no street lights and the never ending road bringing you back, so ensure you have an experienced driver who doesnt feel sleepy!
